The Zanskar (also called Zangskar) and Suru Valley extends from the south of Ladakh bordering Lahaul district of Himachal up to Kargil in the West - Northwest  which borders the Kashmir Division of Jammu and Kashmir. Padum, the administrative capital of Zanskar (tehsil or block of Kargil district) is connected to Leh via Kargil. Kargil in turn is connected to Srinagar via Zoji La Pass. The Suru river originates in northern reaches of Zangskar and joins the Dras river at Kargil.

Flanked by the Greater Himalayan Range in the Southwest which acts as a barrier to the monsoon rains, Zanskar is one of the most remote regions of Ladakh. It’s two river system or branches (Doda from Pensi La and Tsarap from Baralach La) flows into the Zanskar river making it a difficult region to traverse to.  It is connected to other regions only through high mountain passes or through the river Zanskar when it freezes over in the winter. Trekking on this frozen river (also called the Chadar Trek) is one of the most difficult and adventurous treks in the Himalayas.

Edelweiss, an European mountain flower is found in this region and so is the Lammergeier or the Bearded Vulture. Blue Poppies At the foothills of the holy mountain of Gumbok Rangan (or Gumburangon), blue poppies can be found.

Being cut off from the rest of the world for 8 months in a year has helped Zanskar’s inhabitants to keep their ancient esoteric form of Tibetan Buddhism alive.

One of the most beautiful and fertile regions of Ladakh is Suru Valley which is formed by the Suru river, an important tributary of River Indus. Lush fields, green alpine meadows, cascading rivers and surrounding snow peaks make this region a trekkers delight. The area between Panikhar and Prakachik has some unparalleled views of the great massif of Nun and Kun and offers some tough and interesting treks.
